As we begin the journey of 2015 it seems fitting that the first blog of the year be 101.  As we step into the flow of this year’s energy let us return to the basics of Reiki:  Reiki 101.  It all begins with the Reiki Principles:

  • Just for today, do not anger.
  • Just for today, do not worry.
  • Just for today, I will live in gratitude. I will honour myself, my parents, my teachers and my elders.
  • Just for today, I will earn my living honestly.
  • Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

These are such profound concepts if we allow the energy of each principle to teach us over the days, months and year of 2015.  Consider that the emotion of anger entangles our energy in the past while worry steals our energy from the present moment.  What would the experience of today be if we could focus and manifest the energy of gratitude, honour, honesty and kindness, even if we don’t particularly feel them in the moment?

My practice over the last 18 years has been to focus on one principle per month.  This month is Just for Today, Do not Anger.  My work will be to notice and allow anger to show itself and its catalyst.  Then, take responsibility for my response – what do I choose to add to this situation?  …Escalated anger?  …Defensiveness?  …Retreat?  Or accept that the emotion is a part of me and just allow it to pass through my system without causing harm to myself or another.  Can I find a way to breath and move the energy through my body?  Can I find a way to bring gratitude to this circumstance, while honouring myself and another?   Can I be honest with myself about the reason for the surfacing of the anger and will I be able to respond with kindness?  Will you join on this journey inward?
